Tools required for installation: 1 .Saw with carbide blade
2 .Tape measure
3 .Straight edge (24 inches or longer)
4. Drop cloth
5. Painters tape
6. Drill Screws (#8 wood screws work best) 7. Glue 8. Gun and hose for glue Small artist paint brush 9. Touch up paint
Before you install: Before installation can begin, the existing or new garage door must be cleaned. Clean the surface with an alcohol based solvent that will not leave a residue. Non-factory finishes must be moved from the door. This includes any type of paint that may have been applied after the door was originally installed. Use a hand held sander, or power washer and wire brush to remove old paint.
Measuring the job: Garage door refacing panels come 9ft tall by 2ft wide. Measure each existing door panel for your cuts.
Use a carbide blade to cut the garage door refacing panels.
Installation: 1) Cut the panels to fit the garage door panels. Using straight edge and carbide blade.
2) Number the panels on the back. This will be your guide in case panels get shifted around after cutting. Number the panels using the following grid as your guide.
3) Spray the adhesive onto the garage door where panel A1 will be placed. Hold the gun 4-5 inches from the door and coat the surface in smooth, non-stop strokes. (Apply consistent pressure to the gun, otherwise the glue will become uneven)
4) Starting with A1, spray the surface of the panel with the provided glue. Make sure the tank is opened all the way. Hold the gun 4-5 inches from the panel, and coat the entire surface.
One pass with the gun should be sufficient. Make sure you do not have any uncovered surface. This glue will set within 1-5 minutes depending on temperature. Spray and place one panel at a time. Allow the glue to rest for 30 seconds. Once the bubbles in the glue begin collapsing, it is ready for use.
5) Once you glue is on both the garage door and the garage door refacing panel, you are ready to put it into place.
6) Place the panel on the door, ensuring that it is aligned with the door seam. Place the top part of the panel, and slowly push along the panel to adhere it. (Once you have placed the panel on the door, push on the panel in several places to ensure that there are no air bubbles) The flat part of the ship-lap should always be on the right side The panel will set within 1-2 minutes of contact. You will have a short window of time to adjust the panel before the adhesive sets.
7) Place B2 into place next to A1. Following the same steps as in panel A1. Use a straight edge to ensure your panels line up properly.
8) Repeat the process for the remaining panels. You may need to trim the panels once you have reached the edge of the door. Place a 1/4 inch piece of wood or aluminum between each section. This will ensure that your panels maintain the proper spacing.
9) Once all of the panels have been placed, use a small artist paint brush, and paint the seams of the door where the resin is visible.
Removing adhesive- If you need to clean the glue, or remove a panel once it has been adhered, use lacquer thinner to release the glue. Place a small putty knife into the lacquer thinner, then carefully wedge it behind the panel. As glue releases, you will be able to use the putty knife to remove the panel.
Optional: You may also use the wood screws to further secure each panel. Once the panel has been glued, you may use a screw from inside the door and screw it through the door panel and 1/4 inch deep into the garage door refacing panel. (Use screws that are 1/4 longer than the thickness of the garage door panel. Longer screws will pop through the face of the garage door refacing panel)
